I always felt like the kid who never really quite fit in.  Different, odd, weird.  Peering in from the edges and looking in at a world that I could never truly ever belong to.   I was the first-born son of 2 deaf parents you see, and that was very much their experience of the outside world.

But of course, peering in at something from the outside only amplifies your curiosity for what is hidden within.  I became obsessed.  I began to wander and explore on my own,  jigging days off school to catch a train from the suburbs into the dense chaotic heart of the Sydney CBD, I silently rambled on my own through crowds of people.  Voyeuristically observing the shifting tapestries of faces, bodies and shafts of light falling across the textures of backstreets to reveal hidden dimensions.  I felt like an alien exploring a new world.  There was something about it that felt both dangerous and safe all at once, and I've spent my life chasing that feeling ever since.

Over time I began to appreciate the unique perspective this afforded me.  It evolved into a desire to expose, elevate and celebrate the essence of a person, an object or a place;  a yearning to coax out the innately beautiful hidden dimensions of  the fundamental things around us that are often overlooked.

And then I discovered photography.  The camera became my tool with which to open up these hidden dimensions,  a way to stop the world for a moment and look more deeply.  A way to connect with people, to slow them down and show them that they are fascinating and beautiful and complex.

I still don't really fit in.  I am still different, odd and weird - but the world really is a beautiful place from that viewpoint.
